Welche Funktion hat die Schilddrüse?

Die Schilddrüse ist ein zentrales Organ des Körpers. Von der Schilddrüse wird Schilddrüsenhormon produziert. Dieses Schilddrüsenhormon bindet an alle Körperzellen. Auf jeder Körperzelle gibt es auf der Oberfläche Schilddrüsen-Rezeptoren an denen das Schilddrüsenhormon wirken kann. Aus diesem Grunde ist die Schilddrüse ein zentrales Organ des Körpers.

Was ist ein Schilddrüsenkropf?

Ein Kropf ist eine Vergrößerung der Schilddrüse, wobei für Männer und für Frauen unterschiedliche Obergrenzen gelten. Ursachen für einen Kropf ist meistens ein Jodmangel oder auch eine direkte Erkrankung der Schilddrüse. Dabei kommt es entweder zu einer diffusen Vergrößerung der Schilddrüse oder auch zu Knoten in der Schilddrüse.

Was ist eine Schilddrüsenüberfunktion?

Bei der Schilddrüsen-Überfunktion zirkuliert zuviel Schilddrüsenhormon im Blut, was eine Reihe von Symptomen auslöst. Typische Symptome einer solchen Hyperthyreose sind unter anderem schneller Puls, Herzklopfen, Schweißneigung, Schlafstörungen, Zittern der Hände, Haarausfall, Wärme-Intoleranz und Gewichtsabnahme, trotz gutem Appetit.

Ich bin seit vielen Jahren Endokrinologe. Wissenschaftlich und klinisch bin ich vor allem an Schilddrüsenerkrankungen interessiert. Deutlich wird dies, durch eine Vielzahl an wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten in den vergangenen Jahren. Weiterhin bin ich aktive Mitglied der Sektion Schilddrüse der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Endokrinologie sowie der Europäischen Schilddrüsengesellschaft (ETA).

Ich bin Ärztliche Leiter der Speziellen Endokrinologie mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Endokrine Tumorerkrankungen am Universitätsklinikum Düsseldorf. Wir behandeln pro Jahr viele tausend Patienten mit Schilddrüsenerkrankungen insbesondere Schilddrüsenkarzinome und Patienten mit Autoimmunerkrankungen der Schilddrüse.
